University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in Minnesota that is part of an academic health center. Because of this, patients have access to the latest innovations in pediatric medicine, including many discoveries made at the University of Minnesota. Over the decades, the University of Minnesota has achieved worldwide recognition for treating the most serious childhood illnesses. Home to the country’s leading cancer treatment and bone marrow transplant programs, our pediatric patients – from the upper Midwest, across the nation, and around the globe – often spend several weeks, and sometimes months, in the hospital due to the severity of their illnesses.
NEED
As medical bills mount during a child’s sickness, parents must often cut work hours during lengthy hospital stays, many times far from home, enduring lost wages, and even lost jobs and homes. Currently, there is limited patient assistance available through hospital funds, nonprofits, as well as state and national government programs. The need for emergency assistance far exceeds the monies available. With your support, we will be able to fulfill many more requests.
HOW IT WORKS
To provide emergency financial assistance to pediatric patient families, University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital social workers use standard criteria to identify patients with the most dire, immediate needs and determine the amount a family may receive.

PARACHUTE FOUNDATION EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE FUND
FUND PURPOSE:
The Parachute Foundation Fund was created to will assist those families in crisis at University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital by reducing the barriers that limit parent’s presence at the bedside of their critically ill child. The fund will support the ancillary costs associated with hospitalization. Items that may be covered, include but are not limited to the following: travel assistance such as parking, taxi vouchers, bus tokens, living expenses such as food/meals and lodging; lost wages, child care, support for out of pocket drug and medical expenses , co-pays, caregiver respite services and other critical needs. The vision of the Parachute Foundation is to impact as many families as possible.

There is no easy way to express our gratitude for the Parachute Foundation Emergency Assistance Fund. At M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital we are keenly aware of the financial burden that hospitalization frequently places on patients and their family members. The need is most often something simple – money to pay for food, rent, clothing or medical equipment not covered by insurance. When patients struggle with these very basic expenses the ensuing stress can feel overwhelming. Over the past two years, we have seen financial hardship associated with pediatric medical diagnoses reach an all-time high. Whether it be related to economic inflation or a pandemic, the need, while always significant, is now greater than ever.
The generosity of this fund has allowed us to ease the burden of financial hardship for over 800 of our pediatric families who are in the midst of a tremendously trying time. Thank you for recognizing and meeting this need – your gift has touched the lives of many.
